Cornwall's Best Family Day Out (That Won't Break the Bank)
Cornwall is packed with incredible things to do, and if you're planning a family trip, you've probably already got a list as long as your arm. St Michael's Mount, the Eden Project, Tintagel Castle, the Minack Theatre — and rightly so, they're all spectacular. But here's the thing: a full family day out at Cornwall's headline attractions can quickly add up, and by the time you've paid for tickets, parking, food and ice creams, your wallet knows all about it.
So what if we told you there's a day out that costs a fraction of the price, keeps the kids happy for hours, welcomes the dog, takes in some of the most beautiful scenery in the country, and leaves everyone with memories they'll talk about for years?
Welcome to the Camel Trail — and Bridge Bike Hire.
The Trail That Does It All For Families
The Camel Trail is one of the most loved cycling and walking routes in the UK, following the stunning Camel Estuary from Wadebridge to the foodie haven of Padstow, and inland to Bodmin and beyond. It's completely flat, entirely traffic-free, and genuinely beautiful at every turn.
At Bridge Bike Hire — the original Camel Trail bike hire, established right here in Wadebridge since 1983 — we've been helping families make the most of it for over four decades. We're the only hire company with direct, traffic-free access to the trail, so you can be on your bikes and exploring within minutes of arriving.
We have bikes for every age and ability, from little ones in child seats and trailers to super comfort bikes, tandems, and a full range of accessibility bikes. And yes — the family dog is more than welcome.
Keep the Costs Down Without Missing Out
Here's the honest truth: a family of four can have an absolutely brilliant day on the Camel Trail for well under £100 all in — and that's with lunch in Padstow included. Compare that to a family ticket at some of Cornwall's bigger attractions and the saving speaks for itself.
Here are a few ideas for making a full day of it without spending a fortune:
Pick up a picnic in Wadebridge — Before you set off, stop by Le Snack in Wadebridge for freshly made sandwiches, snacks and drinks. Pack them in a rucksack and find your own perfect spot along the riverbank. Some of the secluded little beaches tucked along the trail are absolute gems for a picnic stop. you can give them a call on 01208 640815
Cycle into Padstow for lunch — Padstow has no shortage of cafés, pasty shops and fish and chip spots that won't cost a fortune. Lock up the bikes, wander the harbour and soak it all in. It's a genuine Cornish experience that the big attractions simply can't replicate.
Try crabbing off the quay — A bucket, a line and a bit of bacon is all you need. Kids absolutely love it and it costs next to nothing. Wadebridge and Padstow both offer great spots.
Walk or cycle a stretch of the coast path — If you fancy stretching your legs after your ride, the coast path around the Padstow and Rock area offers stunning views that rival anything in Cornwall. Completely free and completely breathtaking.
Explore Rock and the estuary — The foot ferry between Padstow and Rock runs throughout the season and costs just a few pounds. It's a lovely little adventure the kids will enjoy, and Rock has its own quieter charm.
The Big Attractions Are Worth It — But Not Every Day
We're not here to talk you out of visiting St Michael's Mount, the Eden Project, Tintagel or the Minack Theatre — they really are spectacular and worth a visit. But if you're planning a few days or more in Cornwall or you don’t want to spend a fortune every day, you don't need to. You need a balance — and that's exactly what a day or two exploring the Camel Trail delivers.
It's relaxed, it's flexible, it's genuinely fun for all ages, and it leaves a little room in the budget for a well-earned Cornish cream tea on the way home!
