The Camel Trail to

Wenford Bridge & Bodmin

Cycling from Wadebridge Bodmin on the Camel Trail

The first 5.5 miles of we call Upriver on the Camel Trail. Up river, doesn’t mean it’s uphill. This part of the trail is still flat and still follows the river as it makes it’s way through open pasture and woodland towards the market town of Bodmin.

There is a choice around half a mile outside Bodmin where you can continue on into Bodmin, carry on past the fishing pools and forestry towards Wenford Bridge or stop at the pub for a drink, play and bite to eat.

History

This upriver section of the trail is full of reminders of the railway with old platforms still in place, beautiful bridges and even a working steam train which runs along side the trail for 100 yards or so near Bodmin. With lots of places to stop for a picnic along the way, there are plenty of opportunities to relax and enjoy the views.

Bluebells and Birds

The Bluebell woods as they are known in our family are well worth a visit and these beautiful flowers have spread themselves along the trail creating quite the picture in Spring. The many benches and picnic spots are very handy for making the most of this natural attraction.

I don’t think I’ve ever cycled the trail and not seen at least one bird spotter, so keep an eye out for all the unusual wildlife and you wind your way along and over the river.

Visit All Year Round

The Camel Trail is one of those magical places which is worth visiting no matter what time of year and the trail upriver is slightly more sheltered on winter days and quieter than the trail to Padstow.

Each season beings something new to the trail, the beautiful flowers in Spring, lush greenery in summer, stunning colours in autumn and a little shelter in winter.

Kingfishers can be found on The Camel Trail Bridge Bike Hire

As a family we have always loved exploring up river on the Camel Trail. There are a couple of families of otters, kingfishers, loads of fish, deer and so much more to keep an eye out for.

Our favourite place, as you might have realised is the Bluebell Woods but our kids have also loved the old platforms, running up and down and imagining the trains coming and going.

It’s mostly a quiet trail and there’s lots of places to stop off along the way and at both finishing points, Bodmin and Wenford Bridge, but it’s best to check during off peak seasons that your destination will be open!

The whole trail is mixed use meaning there are plenty of walkers, runners, dogs, horse riders and a variety of ages from very young to very old using the trail. We’d encourage you to take your time and say hello to people as you pass.

You never know who you might meet.
